Filmmaker and actress Biodun Stephen has urged actors and filmmakers in the country to focus on building a strong presence at home before chasing international recognition.
Stephen reflected on how the industry’s definition of success has evolved over the years, from featuring in cinema films to securing deals with Netflix, and now pursuing opportunities in Hollywood.
The filmmaker also stressed the importance of connecting with audiences and making a meaningful impact through storytelling, noting that she often receives emotional messages from people who appreciate her work.
According to Stephen, filmmakers should pay less attention to announcing box office figures and focus more on how their films touch lives and resonate with audiences.
Speaking in an interview, she said:
“Everyone wanted to be in a cinema movie because they thought they had made it. Then it was Netflix, and now everybody is chasing Hollywood. But have you even conquered Nigeria? Can you go to Kano State and have people recognise you as an actor?”.
