The body of 29-year-old aspiring actress and model, Anela Madikazi, was discovered in a quarry in Bo-Kaap, Cape Town, South Africa.
Last seen on Sunday, August 18, 2024, wearing a long, light blue dress and black leather jacket, her remains were found the following day around 5p.m. by young boys playing soccer near an abandoned rugby field on Strand Street.

Madikazi’s family, unaware of her death at the time, had been searching for her for more than a week. Her devastated mother, Bulelwa Madikazi, described how Anela, who was renting in Philippi, had uncharacteristically missed her regular video call with her niece, raising concerns.
Anela had reportedly been with her cousin in the city center before she went missing. The two had spent time at a pub and visited a friend, after which Anela took a cab around 9 p.m., heading back to her friend’s place. Her cousin recalled the address but could not remember details about the vehicle or driver.

The family became alarmed after Anela was reported missing. They searched mortuaries and eventually found her body, though they were not allowed to view her face due to disfigurement. Bulelwa suspects Anela may have jumped into the quarry to escape danger.

Marc Truss, chairperson of the Cape Town Central Community Policing Forum (CPF), suggested that gender-based violence might have played a role in her death, with evidence pointing to possible head trauma. The police are awaiting post-mortem results to determine the exact cause of death.
Anela was featured as a model on the show “Hair to the Throne” and had also pursued acting.
