Botswana’s President Mokgweetsi Masisi threatened that Botswana might send 20,000 elephants to Germany amidst a disagreement over hunting trophy imports.
The president criticized Germany, particularly its environment ministry, for considering stricter limits on trophy imports due to poaching concerns.
Masisi argued that elephants in Botswana had grown to around 130,000, leading to conflicts with humans and damage to villages.
To address the elephant population, Botswana previously offered elephants to Angola and Mozambique, and now considers offering them to Germany.
The president emphasized that hunting is crucial for controlling elephant numbers and criticized the potential ban on trophy imports.
While Germany is discussing stricter import rules, Botswana has not officially raised concerns with the German government on the matter.
The dispute highlights broader issues surrounding trophy hunting and conservation efforts, with both sides advocating for their perspectives.
