Comedian and skit maker Brain Jotter has shared a few personal experiences that made him question how much people can be trusted when it comes to everyday transactions in Nigeria.
Speaking during an interview, he talked about how even something as simple as giving a driver money to buy fuel can become an issue.
According to him, there are cases where a driver could spend less than the money provided and still find a way to present a receipt for the full amount.
He said:
“The lack of trust in Nigeria is alarming. You send your driver ₦5,000 for fuel, but he’s buying ₦3,500. If you ask him for a receipt, you’ll get the receipt. Men dey run receipt.”
He also spoke about an experience involving a wig he bought for his mother. Since he admitted that he does not know much about wigs, he relied on the price and what he was given, only to later feel that he had spent far more than the item was worth.
“I wanted to buy a wig for my mama. I bought this wig, ₦800 and something thousand. And I don’t know about wigs. Then she brought the wig and shampoo, and more. Overpriced nonsense everywhere”, he stated.
Another experience involved a Toyota Sienna he bought after asking a mechanic to inspect it before making the purchase. Brain Jotter said he trusted the inspection, but after getting the car, he discovered that the problem had apparently been cleared rather than properly repaired.
The seller had told him the engine was in good condition, but Brain Jotter said he soon began hearing an unusual sound from it. He recalled that the car had a mileage of about 10,000, while the seller had confidently described the engine as a “mad engine.”
“That car, I no drive am reach four days. Nigerians go through these things”, he added.
