In a letter dated July 14 and released to the public on Wednesday, Atiku cited a departure from the founding ideals of the party as the reason for his decision.

“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” the letter stated.

“Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a Presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life.

As a founding father of this esteemed Party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision. However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.”

Atiku thanked the PDP and its leadership for the opportunities and support given to him over the years, even as he acknowledged the “irreconcilable differences” that forced his exit.

In a related move, all ward and local government chairmen of Jada LGA in Adamawa State—Atiku’s home base—also announced their resignation from the party.

Sources close to the former vice president indicate that he is set to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he is expected to play a major role in the emerging opposition coalition ahead of 2027.
