Former Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye, has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), blaming the party’s failure to address Nigeria’s deepening political crisis

Melaye made his exit public on Thursday through a post on his official X handle, where he shared a signed resignation letter addressed to the PDP chairman in Ward 1, Aiyetoro Gbede, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
Dated July 4, 2025, the letter read in part: “This decision has become imperative due to the lack of potency and capacity by the party to deliver the Nigerian people from the prevailing political cankerworms that have eaten deeply into the fabric of our dear nation.”
Melaye, who was the PDP’s governorship candidate in the 2023 Kogi election, said he could no longer, in good conscience, remain active in a party he believes has strayed from the path of meaningful change.
He added, “Please consider this as my formal withdrawal from the party and all its activities at all levels with immediate effect.”
The former lawmaker, however, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve under the PDP and participate in its activities during his membership.
Melaye’s departure is the latest in a wave of high-profile exits from the party, as political realignments gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Earlier this month, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also dumped the PDP. In his own resignation letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the PDP chairman of Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State, Atiku cited irreconcilable differences and accused the party of abandoning its founding principles.
