President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sent a new Minimum Wage bill to the House of Representatives for them to review and pass into law.
This bill aims to make the recently agreed N70,000 minimum wage legal. This wage was decided after long talks between labor unions, private businesses, and the government.
The President’s letter was read out in the House on Tuesday. The bill sets out the new national minimum wage and explains how it should be put into practice.
President Tinubu asked the lawmakers to pass the bill quickly so that Nigerian workers can start benefiting from it soon.
In addition, the President sent another request to change the Nigeria Police Act. This change is about how the Inspector General of Police is appointed and how long they can serve.
Both of these requests are based on the country’s 1999 Constitution.
