The Toronto Police Service has arrested a 46-year-old Nigerian woman, Amaka Sonnberger, in connection with online content posted on August 25, 2024
The content allegedly threatened harm to specific members of the Nigerian community in Canada, specifically those of Yoruba and Edo descent.
Amaka was arrested on September 1 and charged with Uttering Threats.
According to PUNCH, she is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice, located at 2201 Finch Avenue West, on Monday, September 2, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. in courtroom 107.,
The Toronto Police Service is treating this investigation as a suspected hate-motivated offense.

The investigation and potential prosecution of this case will follow standard procedures for suspected hate-motivated offenses.
This includes consultation with the Crown and consideration of hate as an aggravating factor if a person is charged and convicted.
Additionally, the police may investigate whether the alleged offense constitutes hate propaganda (hate speech), which requires the Attorney General’s consent to lay charges.
