The announcement was made on June 5, 2025, by President Mahamat Idriss Déby, who described the move as a matter of principle and national dignity.

“Chad has no planes to offer, no billions of dollars to give, but Chad has its dignity and pride,” Déby stated, underscoring his country’s right to respond firmly to what it sees as unfair treatment.

The U.S. government, under the reinstated travel ban, restricted visas from 12 countries—including Chad, Iran, Afghanistan, and Haiti—citing inadequate security screening measures and a lack of cooperation in deportation processes. The policy, effective from June 3, has sparked criticism across Africa.

The African Union has expressed concern, warning that the ban could damage diplomatic, trade, educational, and cultural ties between the U.S. and African nations. The AU urged Washington to engage in more collaborative dialogue rather than imposing blanket restrictions.

As diplomatic tensions rise, it remains unclear how long Chad’s retaliatory visa suspension will remain in effect or whether other African countries will follow suit.
