On April 20, 2025, China became the first country to commercially launch a 10G broadband network, debuting the ultra-fast service in Sunan County, Hebei Province

The initiative is a joint effort between tech giant Huawei and telecom provider China Unicom.
According to The Economic Times, the new network boasts lightning-fast download speeds of up to 9,834 Mbps and uploads of 1,008 Mbps, with latency as low as 3 milliseconds. Powered by 50G Passive Optical Network (PON) technology, this leap places China well ahead of global averages—far surpassing the UAE’s current peak of 543 Mbps.
To put the speed into perspective, Times of India reports that a 20GB 4K movie, which would typically take 7–10 minutes to download on a 1Gbps connection, can now be downloaded in under 20 seconds.
Initially rolled out in Sunan County, the service will soon expand to major cities like Wuhan and Xiong’an, in line with China’s broader agenda to build cutting-edge digital infrastructure. Experts say the technology could dramatically enhance capabilities in cloud computing, 8K video streaming, virtual reality, and smart homes.
Online reactions have been swift, with users on X calling the rollout a “power move” and a potential game-changer for AI and surveillance technologies. Still, some observers are urging caution. As BBN Times points out, the term “10G” refers to network speed, not an entirely new global standard. Additionally, the choice of launching in the relatively obscure Sunan County has raised speculation about whether the move is meant more to project innovation than serve practical needs.
While the real-world impact of this breakthrough remains to be seen, China’s 10G broadband debut has unquestionably set a new benchmark—and ignited a fresh wave of global competition in the race for next-generation connectivity.
