Chioma Omeruah says couples should heal from past hurts before marriage

Nigerian comedianne and actress Chioma Omeruah believes marriage works best when two people come into it ready to share the responsibility of building a life together.

For her, love is important, but it cannot replace emotional maturity, commitment and the willingness to keep growing as individuals and as partners.

She believes people often underestimate the impact of unresolved emotional wounds. Those struggles can influence how couples communicate, handle disagreements and support one another through difficult moments. While no one has everything figured out before getting married, being honest about personal challenges and making an effort to heal can make a relationship healthier.

Chioma also argues that marriage should never become the burden of one person. A relationship is stronger when both partners are equally invested, willing to listen, make sacrifices and work through life’s ups and downs together instead of expecting one person to carry the emotional weight.

In her words, “Two shattered people cannot come together and make a home. When we are broken, we hurt ourselves and others. Marriage is not the responsibility of one person but requires commitment, effort and emotional maturity from both partners.”

It’s the kind of perspective that shifts the conversation away from grand romantic gestures and towards the everyday choices that keep a marriage standing. Loving someone matters, but so does showing up, doing the work and growing together over time.
