Ronald Ngobeni, aged 31, has been sentenced to life in prison by the High Court of South Africa, Johannesburg, for the murder of his 5-year-old son, Rivoningo Capu.
Additionally, he received a two-year sentence for obstructing justice. The sentences will be served concurrently, as confirmed by Phindi Mjonondwane, the National Prosecuting Authority’s spokesperson for the Gauteng Division.
Ngobeni, who has been in police custody since October 10, 2022, was found guilty after an investigation led by Warrant Officer Koko revealed disturbing details. Ngobeni had deceived his son’s grandparents, claiming he would buy clothes for the child but instead murdered him on October 7, 2022. Initially fabricating a story about leaving the child with a street vendor, Ngobeni’s deception was exposed when the vendor denied any involvement. The child’s decomposed body, with a fatal head injury, was later discovered in a shallow grave.
During the trial, Ngobeni pleaded for leniency, apologizing to the court and the child’s mother, Emihle Capu. However, Senior State Advocate Thami Mpekana argued successfully that Ngobeni’s actions were premeditated and lacked credible justification.
Emihle Capu, in her victim impact statement, expressed the profound impact of her son’s murder, revealing that her mother, eight months pregnant at the time of the crime, lost her unborn child due to the trauma and stress inflicted by the tragedy.
In delivering the verdict, Judge Karam underscored Ngobeni’s danger to society, emphasizing the necessity of a life sentence to safeguard the community. “The National Prosecuting Authority welcomes the life sentence for Ronald Ngobeni, ensuring justice for the senseless murder of his innocent son,” added Mjonondwane.
