Justice K. B. Olawoyin of the Oyo State High Court, Court 8, Ring Road, Ibadan, has set Tuesday, January 13, for ruling on the bail applications filed by Ooni of Ife’s ex-queen, Naomi Silekunola, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, and Abdulahi Fasasi
Hamzat, the owner of Agidigbo FM in Ibadan, and Fasasi, Principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, are standing trial alongside Naomi over a stampede that occurred during a Christmas funfair at Islamic High School in December 2024. The incident tragically claimed the lives of over 35 children.
The bail applications were heard on Tuesday at the Oyo State High Court. Counsel for the suspects presented their arguments, urging the court to grant bail.
Representing the suspects were Musibau Adetunmbi (SAN) for Naomi Silekunola, Waheed Olajide for Fasasi, and Adekunle Sobaloju (SAN) for Oriyomi Hamzat. The proceedings, which lasted over five hours, featured separate arguments from each counsel emphasizing the lack of sufficient evidence to justify their clients’ continued detention.
However, the state, led by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Abiodun Aikomo, opposed the bail applications with a counter-motion, arguing that the suspects should remain in custody at the Nigerian Correctional Centre, Agodi.
After hearing submissions from both sides, Justice Olawoyin adjourned the case, with a ruling on the bail applications now scheduled for January 13.
