The Delta State Government has introduced a strict dress code for civil servants aimed at promoting discipline and modesty in workplace

The new directive prohibits bushy beards, artificial or braided hair, long eyelashes, fake nails, and other forms of what the government describes as “indecent appearance” among public workers.

Issued in a circular by the Office of the Head of Service, the government instructed that all public servants must now maintain neat, professional, and modest attire that reflects their rank in the civil service.

Department heads have been tasked with monitoring employees’ appearance, with orders to send anyone violating the dress code home to change before returning to work. Persistent defiance could attract disciplinary action.

The circular stated: “To address the rising trend of improper dressing in the State Public Service, a review of the existing dress code in circular letter No. HOS. 15/13/74 of 12th March, 2009, has been undertaken to uphold decency in the appearance of Public Servants across the State.

“It is crucial for senior public servants to set the standard by exemplifying appropriate dressing, guiding and correcting subordinates. Any lapses observed may attract sanctions in line with Public Service Rule No. 04314, which states: ‘No Officer shall appear in the office or anywhere in his official capacity attired in a manner deemed inappropriate or immodest.'”
