Democratic Republic of Congo’s President, Felix Tshisekedi named Judith Suminwa as the country’s inaugural female prime minister, ending weeks of uncertainty on Monday.
Suminwa’s appointment comes after Tshisekedi’s second-term inauguration in January, which initiated a prolonged search for a majority coalition in the National Assembly before a prime minister could be selected and a government formed.
Expressing her acknowledgement of the significant responsibility bestowed upon her, Suminwa pledged to work towards peace and the country’s development, as conveyed on national television.
The Congolese government faces numerous challenges, including escalating conflict and humanitarian crises in the eastern regions, along with the management of the nation’s abundant mineral resources.
During his initial tenure, Tshisekedi vowed to combat systemic corruption, revive the economy, address profound inequalities, and tackle insecurity in the eastern regions. However, critics argue that he made insufficient progress on these fronts.
