Rene Wakama, head coach of Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has been named the FIBA Best Women’s Basketball Coach of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games
This recognition comes after leading Nigeria to a historic quarter-final finish, making them the first African nation to reach the last eight in Olympic basketball history.
Wakama’s impressive run in Paris included a stunning upset over third-ranked Australia and a remarkable win against top-ranked Canada, securing Nigeria’s spot in the quarter-finals.
Although they fell to the United States, Wakama’s team showed strength against the world’s best.
Wakama’s transformation of D’Tigress has earned her this prestigious award, beating out notable coaches Cheryl Reeve (USA) and Jean-Aimé Toupane (France).
As the first female head coach of D’Tigress, Wakama has made a significant impact, leading the team to their fourth consecutive FIBA Afrobasket Women’s Championship in 2023.
