The petition was delivered on Friday at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja by members of the All Progressives Congress Young Leaders Alliance, led by the group’s convener, Mohammed Ireji.

In a statement, Ireji questioned the EFCC’s delay in acting on previous petitions filed against the former Zamfara State governor.

“We are here today to formally request that the EFCC reopen the investigation into the corruption allegations against Matawalle, the State Minister for Defence,” Ireji said.

He noted that several petitions had already been submitted, including those filed by the APC Akida Forum on May 3, 2024, and again on September 30, 2024, urging action against the minister.

Citing examples of EFCC’s past actions, Ireji praised the agency’s resolve in tackling corruption, including probes of former ministers and governors such as Betta Edu, Yahaya Bello of Kogi, and Darius Ishaku of Taraba.

“If all these former governors and ministers were not above the law and the EFCC, who would shield the former governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle, from investigation? He is not a governor now. Who is stopping EFCC from doing its work?” he asked.

Responding to the protesters, EFCC Acting Director of Security, Idowu Adedeji, acknowledged receipt of the petition and assured that it would be forwarded to the appropriate department for necessary action.
