The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has summoned Subomi and Wahab, the sons of billionaire industrialist Razaq Okoya, for questioning over alleged naira abuse
In an invitation signed by Michael Wetkas, acting director of the Lagos directorate of the EFCC, the duo has been directed to report to the head of the special operations team at the EFCC office on 15A Awolowo Road by 10am on Monday, January 13, 2025.
The Okoya brothers have drawn public ire after featuring in a promotional video for a new song that showed them “abusing the naira.” The video, which showed a police officer holding stacks of N1,000 notes as the brothers danced around him, sparked outrage on social media.
On January 10, Muyiwa Adejobi, spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), confirmed the officer’s arrest, stating that his actions were unethical and would be subject to disciplinary action.
“The policeman captured in the recent viral video shared by the sons of Lagos businessman Chief Okoya, where they were abusing the naira, has been identified and detained for disciplinary action,” Adejobi wrote on X. “The involvement of the policeman has been condemned, as it’s unethical. We will always strive hard to uphold the sanctity, credibility, and core values of the police.”
In 2024, the EFCC stepped up its crackdown on naira abuse, referencing Section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act. Notably, social media celebrities like Bobrisky and Cubana Chief Priest were targeted by the agency for similar offenses.
