Egypt claimed a 2–1 win over Nigeria in a pre-Africa Cup of Nations friendly in Cairo on Tuesday, thanks to a second-half goal from Mostafa Mohamed

The hosts took an early lead just before the 30th minute when Mahmoud Saber converted a precise cross from Zizo, who consistently troubled Nigeria’s defence down the right flank.

Nigeria had limited attacking opportunities but nearly equalised when Paul Onuachu’s long pass forced Yasser Ibrahim into an almost own goal, saved sharply by goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy.

The Super Eagles eventually levelled the score. Zaidu Sanusi’s free kick from the left was mishandled by El Shenawy, allowing defender Chidozie Awaziem to head in from close range.

Egypt regained the advantage in the second half as Mostafa Mohamed finished calmly inside the box following another incisive move involving Zizo.

Despite Nigeria’s efforts to respond, they could not break through, and Egypt held on to the win, gaining confidence ahead of AFCON.

Egypt will open their tournament campaign against Zimbabwe on Monday, December 22, while Nigeria face Tanzania on December 23.
