Elon Musk, billionaire entrepreneur and former ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, has announced the launch of a new political party called the America Party, aimed at challenging what he describes as the United States’ “one-party system
Taking to his platform X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Musk said, “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
The announcement marks a dramatic shift in Musk’s political involvement. Once Trump’s top donor during the 2024 election, Musk fell out with the president after heading the Department of Government Efficiency, where he led an aggressive campaign to slash federal spending and reduce government jobs.
Their relationship soured further after Trump pushed Republicans to pass his sweeping domestic agenda — the “One Big Beautiful Bill” — which Musk strongly opposed. Calling it “debt slavery,” Musk criticized Republican lawmakers who supported the legislation, accusing them of abandoning fiscal responsibility. Experts say the bill will add an estimated $3.4 trillion to the national deficit over the next decade.
On Independence Day, Musk conducted a poll on X asking Americans if they wanted “independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system.” The poll garnered over 1.2 million responses, with two-thirds in favor of forming a new party.
“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” Musk wrote.
The feud escalated last month when Trump, angered by Musk’s criticism, hinted at drastic retaliation. Asked by reporters whether he would consider deporting Musk — who became a U.S. citizen in 2002 — Trump replied, “We’ll have to take a look.” He also threatened to strip federal funding from Musk’s businesses, including SpaceX and Tesla.
As Musk moves forward with the America Party, his bold entry into politics is expected to intensify the national debate over the future of U.S. governance and the viability of breaking the two-party dominance that has defined American politics for generations.
