Former Lagos State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman, Tunji Shelle, has resigned from the party and formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing gross indiscipline and internal crises within the PDP
Shelle, along with other prominent defectors—including ex-PDP Board of Trustees member Abimbola Ogunkelu, former state chairman Muritala Ashorobi, Lagos East PDP Vice Chairman Tai Benedict, former youth leader Niyi Adams, and ex-South West secretary Rahman Owokoniran—was received at an affirmation ceremony in Lagos by ADC National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola and other party leaders.

Explaining his decision, Shelle accused PDP leaders of failing to confront what he described as the disruptive influence of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
“Wike cannot hijack the party, and the rest of us continue to look as if we are helpless. One man cannot say he is working for APC while holding PDP to ransom. I think the leaders are compromised,” Shelle said.
He added that the defection of top leaders had left the PDP in Lagos severely weakened.
“PDP is now empty with all its leaders moving to ADC in Lagos,” he declared.
Shelle praised the ADC as a party of “tested and trusted politicians” capable of challenging the ruling APC in 2027. He expressed confidence in the leadership of Interim Chairman David Mark and National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, describing them as men who could steer the party to victory.
Other defectors echoed his sentiments. Owokoniran declared that “PDP has lost track. PDP is gone. ADC is the only opportunity to challenge APC,” while Benedict hinted that more defections were imminent: “We are emptying PDP members in Lagos State into ADC. Others are on the way; they want to take their last supper before coming.”
Adams claimed over 5,000 members had already crossed to ADC across the 20 local government areas of Lagos and vowed to work tirelessly to secure victory for the party in the 2027 general elections, dismissing PDP’s chances of resolving its crisis even after its planned national convention in November.
