Legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti has been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, becoming the first Nigerian artiste ever to receive the honour

He was recognised in the “Early Influence” category, alongside notable global figures including American rapper Queen Latifah, Cuban music icon Celia Cruz, rapper MC Lyte, and country-rock pioneer Gram Parsons.

The announcement was made on Monday night in the United States during a broadcast tied to the American music awards process.

Also set to be honoured is Nigerian-born British singer Sade Adu, who will be inducted in the “Performer” category alongside artists such as Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Oasis, Luther Vandross, and Wu-Tang Clan.

However, several globally recognised stars including Shakira, Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill, New Edition, and Pink were not included in the final selection despite earlier nominations.

Organisers revealed that more than 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry professionals took part in the voting process.

The official induction ceremony is scheduled to hold on November 14 at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.

Fela’s latest recognition adds to his historic achievements, following his posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award received earlier in January, making him the first African artist to earn the honour.
