The Federal Government has introduced a new National Textbook Ranking System for primary, junior, and senior secondary schools as part of broader reforms aimed at improving the quality and standardisation of education in Nigeria
In a statement released on Sunday by the Ministry of Education’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo, the initiative was described as a measure to eliminate substandard learning materials and ensure only curriculum-aligned textbooks are used in classrooms nationwide.

The ministry explained that while the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council will continue to retain its statutory role of approving textbooks, a new structured ranking process will now be introduced to assess and classify approved materials based on quality and suitability.
According to the statement, “Approved textbooks will now undergo a structured national ranking process to identify the most suitable options for each subject and level.”
To implement the system, the council will set up Standing Subject Committees made up of education experts who will evaluate textbooks using academic and teaching standards.
The government added that only a limited number of top-ranked textbooks will be approved for use in schools, with the aim of ensuring consistency and improved learning outcomes across the country.
It further stated that any textbook not ranked under the new system will no longer be allowed for classroom use, even if it had been previously approved.
