The 2023 Labour Party governorship candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has called on the Federal Government to consider licensing firearms if it cannot guarantee the safety of citizens
Rhodes-Vivour made the statement on Monday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, monitored by Daily Post, in the wake of rising insecurity and recent abductions across the country.
“This is not just about the north. Over the weekend, we witnessed abductions in Kwara and Ogun States. The destruction of institutions and the loss of public trust make people lose hope in government,” he said.
“I’m speaking on this because of the government’s failure that we find ourselves in. If the government cannot step up, then they should start considering licensing firearms,” Rhodes-Vivour added.
He warned that repeated government failures could compel citizens to take their safety into their own hands and stressed that short-term measures will not prevent people from seeking long-term self-protection.
Rhodes-Vivour described leaving citizens defenseless in the face of insecurity as an act of wickedness when governments fail to protect their people.
