The estate was recovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and officially handed over to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.

This was confirmed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Salisu Haiba, who said the estate was formally transferred at the Ministry’s headquarters in Mabushi.

“The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has taken delivery of the 753 housing units in Abuja, recovered from the former Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, by the EFCC,” the statement read.

Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Dangiwa, praised the EFCC for its anti-corruption efforts, describing the handover as a major milestone.

“This marks a significant moment in our commitment to ensuring that recovered assets are put to productive use in ways that directly benefit Nigerians,” he said.

Dangiwa revealed that the ministry, in collaboration with the EFCC, will soon conduct a joint inspection of the estate to assess its structural integrity and overall condition.

“We intend to carry out thorough integrity and structural assessments on all buildings and associated infrastructure to confirm their safety and suitability for habitation,” he added.

He further disclosed that the housing units will be offered for public sale as well as for special government needs. The sale process, he said, will be transparent and competitive.

“For the public sale component, we will adopt a transparent and competitive process. This will include a nationwide advertisement and the use of the Renewed Hope Portal where interested Nigerians can submit their Expressions of Interest,” Dangiwa stated.

EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, who led the handover, stressed the importance of accountability in asset recovery.

“It is important for us to demonstrate to Nigerians that whatever proceeds of crime we recover will be applied transparently and in a manner that benefits the public,” Olukoyede said. “We will not allow looted assets to be looted again.”

Godwin Emefiele is currently facing trial on multiple charges related to financial misconduct and corruption.
