FIFA on Wednesday officially announced the final line-up for the inter-confederation play-off tournament, confirming DR Congo as Africa’s representative
The development effectively ends Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In an accreditation notice shared with journalists ahead of the competition, FIFA outlined the tournament format and listed the six participating nations, with DR Congo taking Africa’s slot.
Nigeria had previously challenged the result of their November 2025 CAF play-off against DR Congo. The Nigeria Football Federation lodged a formal protest, alleging that DR Congo fielded ineligible players during the decisive match, which ended 1-1 and was decided on penalties in DR Congo’s favor.
The appeal sought to overturn the result and secure a spot for the Super Eagles in the inter-continental play-offs, but FIFA’s confirmation of DR Congo’s participation has ruled out Nigeria’s inclusion.
