France’s lower house of parliament has passed a bill to prohibit discrimination against hairstyles like dreadlocks, afros, and braids, aiming to address workplace bias.
The French National Assembly has approved a law to combat discrimination based on hairstyles, including dreadlocks, braids, and afros. Championed by Black lawmaker Olivier Serva, the bill seeks to empower victims of hair-based discrimination, particularly in employment settings. It still requires Senate approval to become law.
The legislation extends protection to all hair textures and styles, aiming to ensure fairness in hiring practices. Reactions from Parisians, especially Black women, have been largely positive, welcoming the move towards inclusivity.
Similar measures exist in the United States, where states have enacted laws against hair discrimination. However, not all in France support the bill, reflecting debates over cultural identity and equality principles.
