The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has introduced a new contactless biometric system for driver’s licence issuance, a move aimed at modernising Nigeria’s motor vehicle administration
The announcement came as part of the Corps’ 2025 Ember Months Road Safety Campaign, themed “Tech Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving,” targeting a reduction in accidents during the peak festive season from December 15 to January 15.

Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed said the upgraded system will end delays and eliminate temporary licences. “Our printing facility now produces 15,000 driver’s licences daily, and we aim to increase this output to clear the backlog by the second week of November 2025,” he explained.
The contactless biometric system enables on-the-spot licence printing immediately after data capture. “Once captured, you receive your driver’s licence instantly. No more temporary licences or long waits,” Mohammed added.
Developed in collaboration with state governments and stakeholders, the system integrates driving schools, Vehicle Inspection Offices, and certification processes into a faster, streamlined workflow. Advanced technology allows fingerprints to be scanned without physical contact, ensuring both convenience and accuracy.
The FRSC has also linked the system to the National Identification Number (NIN) database to allow seamless identity verification. Deputy Corps Marshal Aliyu Datsama confirmed the system is already operational and will be implemented nationwide, including Lagos.
Datsama noted that the backlog of 800,000 unprocessed licences has been halved to 400,000, with a current daily production capacity of 40,000 licences. He urged Nigerians who have completed the capture process to collect their licences, highlighting that over 206,000 remain unclaimed across states.
The initiative underscores the FRSC’s commitment to digitalising driver’s licence services while enhancing efficiency and road safety in Nigeria.
