Mahama also announced Joshua’s appointment as the continental ambassador for boxing, praising the former unified heavyweight world champion for his global influence and inspiring legacy.

“If you want us to give you a Ghanaian passport, we will,” Mahama said to applause. “We need people like him to help change the lives of young people. He will be our ambassador, not just for Ghana, but for Africa.”

Joshua was warmly received by Mahama alongside Ghanaian boxing legend Azumah Nelson, Sports Minister Kofi Adams, and other dignitaries. The president described Joshua as an icon loved in Ghana and noted his visit could spark a new wave of young African boxing talent.

“After him, there will be a wave of boxers who will make Africa proud. You are an icon,” Mahama said.

Joshua, who arrived in Ghana on June 13, has engaged in several outreach programs, training sessions, and media interactions. His visit, however, also stirred renewed conversation around the cultural rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana.

Speaking at Jubilee House, Joshua admitted that Ghana wasn’t originally on his itinerary—mainly due to strong nationalist views he’d often heard in Nigeria.

“Coming to Ghana actually wasn’t on my agenda,” he said with a smile. “Because, for some reason, everyone in Nigeria puts Nigeria above Ghana. But I’m here now, and I’m looking around like they’ve been lying to me.”

His comment sparked laughter and applause, with many appreciating the friendly banter between the two countries. Joshua later expressed admiration for Ghana’s hospitality and infrastructure:

“I’m impressed with your beautiful country—its amazing culture, the hospitality, the airport, the organisation. I can’t wait to go back and tell everyone how beautiful this place is.”
