Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is reportedly set to leave the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), barring any last-minute changes

Sources told Daily Trust that Yusuf is likely to defect with or without the consent of his political mentor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The governor, after extensive consultations with stakeholders—including members of the state House of Assembly, local government chairmen, and some federal lawmakers from Kano—has reportedly decided to exit the NNPP.

In a video that went viral on Sunday, Yusuf’s Director of Protocol, Abdullahi Ibrahim Rogo, announced that local government leaders in Rogo LGA had resolved to follow the governor to the APC. Speaking alongside party officials, Rogo said key figures within the Kwankwasiyya movement in the area agreed that both Kwankwaso and Yusuf should make the switch.

“We at Rogo Local Government, under the leadership of Speaker Jibrin Ismail Falgore, myself, the council chairman, caucus leaders, elders, women and youth leaders, have resolved that Kwankwaso is our leader, and that he and Governor Yusuf should take us to APC,” Rogo said.

“This resolution is in the best interest of our people, our country, and even Kwankwaso himself. We believe his presidential ambition can be realised in APC if we join now. We remain loyal to Kwankwasiyya, but for now, joining APC is the solution,” he added, urging supporters to shun abusive politics.

Similarly, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Director-General of Media and Publicity at the Kano Government House, expressed support for the decision of his Dawakin Tofa LGA caucus to follow Yusuf to the APC. LGA Chairman Anas Danmaliki noted that the Kwankwasiyya movement had split into pro- and anti-masses factions, but that he and his councillors would align with the governor.

Sources say Yusuf is expected to make a formal announcement of his defection in the first week of January.

Meanwhile, Senator Kwankwaso reportedly called members of the state House of Assembly to a meeting last Friday, acknowledging that Yusuf was set to leave the NNPP. While he told lawmakers that anyone wishing to follow the governor could do so, Kwankwaso expressed skepticism about the reasons for the defection, reminding them that the NNPP won the 2023 elections “with nobody but God.”

A source added that when lawmakers later met with Yusuf, he described his decision to join APC as “irreversible.”

Yusuf is currently the only governor elected on the NNPP platform in the 2023 general elections.
