Ademola Adeleke, governor of Osun, has granted clemency to Segun Olowookere, who was sentenced to d3ath by hanging in 2010 for allegedly stealing a chicken and eggs
In a statement released on Thursday, Adeleke announced the pardon of 53 convicts, including Olowookere and his co-defendant, Sunday Morakinyo.
Olowookere’s case recently gained widespread attention after an emotional interview with his parents went viral. Speaking with Nigerian actress Biola Adebayo, the parents claimed their son was wrongfully arrested by police officers from the Osun command.
Olanrewaju, Olowookere’s father, revealed that a divisional police officer demanded N30,000 for his son’s release, but he could only raise N20,000.
The public outcry prompted by the viral video led Adeleke to order a full investigation into the case, which culminated in the governor exercising his prerogative of mercy.
