Haiti has declared a state of emergency with a 72-hour curfew around the capital, Port-au-Prince, following a series of violent jailbreaks and escalating insecurity
Armed gangs attacked a major prison in Port-au-Prince over the weekend, resulting in the deaths of at least 12 people and the release of around 4,000 inmates.
The gangs, controlling 80% of the capital, aim to force the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who is currently out of the country.

Two prisons, one in Port-au-Prince and another in Croix des Bouquets, were stormed, with detainees, including gang members implicated in the 2021 killing of President Jovenel Moïse, escaping.
The surge in violence began when Prime Minister Henry left for Nairobi to discuss deploying a Kenyan-led multinational security force to Haiti.
