Sharon Faqua, entrepreneur and wife of Nollywood actor Shawn Faqua, has shared how difficult it was for her to believe the kind of man he was when they were dating.
Speaking on the At His Right Hand podcast hosted by Olive Emodi, Sharon said Shawn’s decision to avoid situations that could compromise his values left her wondering if there was another reason behind it.
She recalled one of their earliest conversations, saying; “When I first started dating him, he was like, we can’t have se.x before marry. I said no problem. And then he says, oh, you also can’t come to my house, because if you come to my house, we’ll be alone. I’m like, hey, I know say this guy dey hide something.”
That suspicion followed her for a while.
She remembered travelling to Lagos one day and arriving so late that the hotel she planned to stay in had no available rooms. Since it was already late, she asked if she could spend the night at Shawn’s house and leave for a hotel the next day.
“I was supposed to come to Lagos for something and my flight was really late. I landed and the hotel I was supposed to stay in were fully booked. So I’m like, please let me just stay in your house and I will go to my hotel”, she stated.
Instead of giving her an immediate answer, Shawn told her he wanted to pray first.
According to Sharon, he said, “No, that giving time, let him ask the spirit.”
She admitted she wasn’t convinced, she said:
“I told my friends that forget this thing, this guy is not honest. I know what I’m saying.”
When he eventually agreed, she still believed he had only done so because he had enough time to clear the house of whoever she imagined was there.
But when she got there, things played out very differently. Shawn slept in the sitting room while she stayed in the bedroom, exactly as he had promised.
Looking back now, Sharon said she realizes those thoughts came from wounds she hadn’t fully dealt with.
“That was just part of what I brought from the past, that was part of the baggages that I brought. His honesty was a problem for me,” she noted.
She also confessed that she struggled to understand the way Shawn cared for her.
“I think the way he loved me was also too much for me.”
She said one of the things that touched her most was that Shawn kept writing handwritten notes whenever he gave her a gift, even though she had never mentioned that she loved them.
“I love handwritten notes, right?. I never discussed it with Shawn. But every time that Shawn sends me a gift, he will do that thing”, Sharon said.
For Sharon, it was those little moments, together with Shawn’s consistency, that slowly replaced her doubts with trust.
