'I was mocked after my PCOS diagnosis' - Chef Amaka

Chef Amaka, the wife of popular health advocate Aproko Doctor, has shared a deeply personal account of the emotional challenges she faced after being diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) shortly after getting married.

Speaking about her experience, she recalled that everything changed just a few months into her marriage when her menstrual cycle suddenly stopped, prompting her to seek medical attention.

“When we got married 3 months after i stopped seeing my period then i went to the hospital, i was diagnosed with PCOS.”

According to her, the condition gradually affected her body in ways she never expected. She explained that she began gaining weight, and the physical changes became noticeable enough to attract unwanted attention from people around her.

Chef Amaka said standing beside her husband often became an uncomfortable experience because of the comments people made about her appearance.

“The syndrome starting giving me funny body structure, I started adding weight, when I stand with my husband, I was looking way older.”

She revealed that some people mocked her by claiming she looked more like the man in the relationship, remarks she described as both insensitive and painful.

“People started throwing me that I’m the man of the house, that i bear my husband.”

However, she said the most heartbreaking comments were those questioning her husband’s masculinity and ability to have children because of their struggles.
“What made me cry was when they said my husband is not man enough to father a child.”

Her story sheds light on the emotional burden many women living with PCOS face, from dealing with the physical symptoms of the condition to coping with societal judgment and misconceptions about fertility. By speaking openly about her journey, Chef Amaka hopes to encourage greater understanding and compassion for people living with the syndrome.
