The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it will conduct by-elections on Saturday, August 16, 2025, to fill vacant legislative seats across the country

The elections will take place in 16 constituencies across 12 states, involving two senatorial districts, five federal constituencies, and nine state assembly constituencies. A total of 3,553,659 registered voters are expected to participate across 32 local government areas, 356 registration areas (wards), and 6,987 polling units.
INEC plans to deploy approximately 30,451 officials to manage the polls.
However, by-elections will not be held in Khana II (Rivers State) and Talata Mafara South (Zamfara State) due to a state of emergency and ongoing legal disputes, respectively.
In addition to the by-elections, INEC will also conduct two court-ordered rerun elections in Enugu South I (Enugu State) and Ghari/Tsanyawa (Kano State) on the same date.
Key dates in the schedule include:
- Party primaries: July 17–21
- Submission of nomination forms: July 22–26
- Campaign period: August 2–14
INEC also announced the resumption of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR). Online pre-registration will begin on August 18, while in-person registration at designated centres will commence on August 25.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible elections and urged all political parties and stakeholders to adhere strictly to the election timetable.
