The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced plans to stage a nationwide protest on December 17 to demand urgent action against rising insecurity in the country

The announcement was made in a communiqué issued on Monday following the NLC National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Lagos. The statement was jointly signed by NLC President Joe Ajaero and Acting General Secretary Benson Upah.

The NEC discussed pressing national and industrial issues, including the recent abduction of 24 schoolgirls in Kebbi State.

The communiqué condemned the kidnapping and the killing of a school staffer during the incident, and criticised the withdrawal of security personnel from the affected school before the attack.

Describing the surge in attacks on schools as alarming, the NEC urged the Federal Government to ensure the protection of all schools, particularly those in remote and vulnerable areas. The council also resolved to mobilise all NLC affiliates and state councils for the protest and demanded an immediate investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the security lapses.

Other key issues discussed included the crisis in the tertiary education sector, the ongoing strike by the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU), and the revival of the Labour–Civil Society Coalition (LASCO). The NEC also expressed concern over the state of the Labour Party, calling for a realignment with working-class principles, ideology, and integrity.

The communiqué warned that failure by the Federal Government to address insecurity and other critical issues could trigger escalated industrial actions across sectors, including health and education. It stressed that workers’ safety and welfare remain a top priority and urged citizens to join in demanding a safer nation.

The NLC emphasised that the planned protest would be peaceful but resolute, aimed at compelling the government to take decisive action. It further called on state governments and security agencies to strengthen protection for vulnerable communities, especially schools, warning that continued neglect could threaten national stability.

Reiterating its commitment, the NEC pledged to continue defending workers’ rights, improving living and working conditions, and supporting initiatives that promote social justice and equitable development across Nigeria.
