Andy Burnham has officially assumed office as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after being invited by King Charles III to form a new government at Buckingham Palace
The former Mayor of Greater Manchester succeeds Keir Starmer, who resigned on Monday after meeting the King. Burnham also took over as Labour Party leader last week.
With his appointment, Burnham becomes the UK’s 59th prime minister and the seventh person to occupy the office in the last decade.
Confirming the development, Buckingham Palace said: “His Majesty received in audience the Rt Hon Andrew Burnham MP and requested him to form a new Administration. The Rt Hon Andrew Burnham MP accepted The King’s offer and kissed hands upon his appointment as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury.”
Before leaving office, Starmer delivered a farewell speech outside 10 Downing Street, saying he was stepping down “with good grace” and “a smile,” adding that his “work is done.”
