The development was confirmed on Saturday by the association’s Assistant Secretary-General, Chidi Aligwe, who said all nurses and midwives are to resume duties immediately.

The seven-day warning strike, which began on Wednesday, was launched to demand better working conditions, including an upward review of shift allowance, improved uniform allowance, a distinct salary structure for nurses, increased core duty allowance, mass recruitment of nursing staff, and the establishment of a nursing department within the Federal Ministry of Health.

The strike was called off after a virtual meeting of NANNM’s National Executive Council (NEC), following negotiations with top government officials on Friday. The meeting involved representatives from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, the Ministry of Labour and Employment, the Office of the Accountant General, and the National Salaries and Wages Commission.

In a circular titled “Suspension of the Ongoing Nationwide Nurses’ Strike” and signed by NANNM National President Haruna Mamman and General Secretary T.A. Shettima, the NEC said the decision to suspend the strike followed a detailed review of the Memorandum of Understanding and the implementation timeline agreed with the government.

“NEC acknowledges the positive steps taken by the Federal Government in responding to the nine core demands of NANNM, particularly the commitment to clear timelines for implementation,” the statement read.

“In view of the formal agreement reached, and in line with the principle of dialogue and good faith, NEC hereby suspends the ongoing nationwide strike action with immediate effect.”

The NEC also directed the national leadership to monitor the implementation of the agreement and ensure full compliance. It further instructed state councils to mobilise members for immediate resumption and warned against any form of victimisation against nurses, including interns and locum staff, who participated in the strike.

The association expressed gratitude to its members for their unity and commitment and reaffirmed its dedication to defending the welfare, dignity, and professional rights of nurses and midwives across the country.
