President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived in Benue State on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, for a one-day condolence visit following the brutal attacks that claimed over 100 lives in the Yelewata community and other areas in Guma Local Government Area
The President, who canceled a previously scheduled visit to Kaduna, landed in Makurdi early Wednesday morning. His itinerary includes visits to some of the affected communities, as well as a town hall meeting with stakeholders at the Government House Banquet Hall.
According to the presidency, the visit is aimed at assessing the humanitarian crisis, commiserating with victims, and reinforcing the federal government’s commitment to restoring peace in the region.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio and key security chiefs are expected to join the President during the visit. This comes as pressure mounts on the federal government to address the worsening security situation in Benue and across the Middle Belt.
However, the planned reception has stirred controversy. Critics say the Benue State Government’s attempt to organize a colorful welcome amid ongoing mass burials is tone-deaf and inappropriate.
