At least 37 miners have d!ed in Kampani Zurak community, Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State, after a carbon monoxide leak early Wednesday morning
Safiyanu Haruna, a miner in the community, confirmed the tragedy, adding that over 20 others injured in the incident were rushed to a hospital in Wase town for treatment.

The incident reportedly occurred around 6:30 a.m., shortly after the miners returned from their morning prayers. Haruna explained that the victims were alive just before leaving for prayers, and the gas leak struck upon their return to the mining site.
“It was carbon monoxide gas that leaked and killed them. Waking up to the sad story of losing 37 miners who had been struggling to make ends meet is very disturbing. Around 5:30 a.m., they were all alive when they left for morning prayers, and it was when they returned that they were found in this condition,” he said.
Haruna added that no rescue efforts were in place at the time, as the personnel who were supposed to arrive in the morning had not yet gotten to the site.
The funeral prayer for the deceased is currently taking place in the community. Residents told reporters that the chairman of Wase LGA attended the ceremony. Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
