The Kaduna State Chapter of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has distanced itself from former Governor Nasir El-Rufai, stating that he is not a recognized member of the party in the state

This comes after reports surfaced that El-Rufai and some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had defected to the SDP. The former governor cited a misalignment between his personal values and the current direction of the APC as his reason for leaving.
In a statement posted on his X handle, El-Rufai expressed disappointment with the APC’s leadership, accusing the party of straying from its founding principles.
“As a founding member of the APC, I have fond memories of working with compatriots to form the party. Since 2013, I had hoped that my personal values and those of the APC would remain aligned until my retirement from politics,” he wrote.
However, at a press conference in Kaduna on Friday, the SDP’s Assistant National Secretary for the Northwest zone, Idris Inuwa, dismissed reports of El-Rufai’s membership as mere speculation, stating that he had not followed due process.
“It has come to our notice that certain individuals, including Nasir El-Rufai, are rumored to have joined the SDP. However, neither the Chairman of the Kaduna North Local Government Chapter nor the leadership of Unguwar Sarki ward has any record of these memberships,” Inuwa said.
He urged El-Rufai and others interested in joining the party to follow the proper procedures.
Inuwa also rejected the alleged dissolution of the Kaduna State SDP Working Committee, calling it unconstitutional.
“The Kaduna State Executive Committee of the SDP categorically rejects the purported dissolution of the State Working Committee as contained in a letter from the National Secretariat dated February 25, 2025,” he stated.
He emphasized that the current State Executive Committee was legitimately elected through a State Congress and holds a four-year mandate. He also criticized the alleged dissolution, arguing that it did not follow the party’s constitutional process, which requires an investigation, a committee, and a fair hearing before any decision is made.
Inuwa concluded by stating that the Kaduna SDP remains open to new members but stressed that proper procedures must be followed.
