The Kano State government has rolled out strict new media regulations designed to reshape the tone and content of broadcast programs across the state

The announcement came via a formal statement signed by Sani Abba Yola, Director of Special Duties at the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs.
The new guidelines followed a strategic quarterly meeting held by the Ministry, which brought together top media executives and government officials.
Defending the decision, Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, said the move was aimed at safeguarding the cultural and moral fabric of Kano. “The new guidelines are not designed to stifle free expression but to ensure responsible communication in line with the values of Kano State,” he stated.
Waiya described the meeting as an avenue to “reinforce ethical journalism, promote mutual respect, and strengthen collaboration between the media and government.” He also commended broadcasters for efforts to reduce “unethical content” and curb the use of abusive language in public discourse.
Despite assurances from the government, some of the directives have sparked controversy. Critics fear the rules could be used to silence dissent and restrict critical views.
One contentious guideline requires all guests on radio and TV programs to sign an agreement pledging not to make remarks deemed defamatory, offensive, or contrary to Kano’s cultural norms.
Additionally, the government has imposed a full ban on live political broadcasts, and media presenters are now prohibited from asking questions or using gestures that might “tarnish the image of the state.”
The government says it has launched awareness campaigns to educate broadcasters, political commentators, and religious leaders on what it calls “responsible communication.”
While officials insist the measures are meant to promote social cohesion and uphold moral standards, many observers warn the new rules could undermine press freedom and weaken the media’s role as a watchdog.
