Nnayereugo, who had been declared wanted in October 2023, arrived in Nigeria in the early hours of Saturday following coordinated efforts by the Nigeria Police Force, the Federal Ministry of Justice, INTERPOL NCB Abuja, and Qatari authorities.

According to a statement released by Force PRO ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi and shared on X, the extradition stemmed from a petition filed by the victim’s family through their lawyers on September 29, 2024. INTERPOL NCB Abuja was assigned to handle the investigation.

Investigations revealed that Nnayereugo allegedly killed Onuwabhagbe, a first-class student of Lead City University, on July 13, 2023, at his residence on 24A Abiola Apooyi Street, Oral Estate, Ajah, Lagos. After the incident, he fled Nigeria and posted a video online in which he appeared to confess to the crime — a move the police described as deceptive.

He was declared wanted on October 13, 2023, and an INTERPOL Red Notice was issued. On October 20, 2023, he was arrested in Freetown, Sierra Leone, under a false identity, “Kanu Princeton Samuel.” However, he escaped during a prison break on November 26, 2023.

Further intelligence revealed that he moved across various regions, including West Africa, East Asia, and the Middle East, using forged identities. He eventually settled in Doha on January 24, 2025, under the name “Toure Abdoulaye,” using a fake Guinean passport to gain employment and remain undetected.

INTERPOL NCB Abuja, working with INTERPOL NCB Doha and using advanced biometrics, confirmed his identity. He was arrested by Qatari authorities in February 2025, after which Nigeria’s official extradition request was approved.

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, praised the international collaboration that led to Nnayereugo’s return and thanked the Qatari government, INTERPOL, and Nigeria’s Ministry of Justice. He assured the public that the suspect will be diligently prosecuted.

Earlier in 2023, the Lagos State Police Command had issued a wanted notice for the suspect. At the time, police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin described him as a 26-year-old man from Abia State, approximately 5’9” tall, dark in complexion, and fluent in English, Igbo, and Pidgin English.
