The Lagos State Government has officially banned all night-time construction activities across the state, limiting building work to between 7:00 am and 6:00 pm from Mondays to Saturdays

The new directive was announced by the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr Oluyinka Olumide, in a statement issued on Thursday by the ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, Mr Mukaila Sanusi.
Olumide explained that the decision aims to protect the environment, prevent building collapses, and promote residents’ overall well-being.
“This restriction must be strictly adhered to by all stakeholders in the construction sector. It is in the public interest and will be enforced by relevant government agencies,” he said.
While acknowledging that building projects can be dynamic, the commissioner stated that any need to work outside the permitted hours must be formally requested and would be assessed individually.
“Concessions may be granted but only after due diligence and evaluation,” he added.
Olumide also called on residents to stay vigilant and report any construction sites operating beyond the approved hours.
“We encourage the public to take ownership of their environment. If you observe construction activities going on outside the approved hours, please report them to the appropriate authorities,” he urged.
Reacting to the development, a construction worker at a site in the Agodo-Egbe area of Alimosho, identified as Musa Tola, told NAN that while the policy could delay some projects, it was a step in the right direction.
“Sometimes we work overnight to meet deadlines but safety is important. If the government is serious about this, we will have to adjust,” he said.
Also commenting, Mrs Ifeoma Uche, a resident of Idimu, welcomed the move.
“Some sites work all night and the noise disturbs everyone. I think this will bring some sanity,” she said.
