Lagos govt debunks Sachet Water Ban

The Lagos State Government has neither banned sachet water nor plans to do so, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, clarified on Sunday

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Wahab responded to a viral video showing individuals destroying sachet water packs at factories and on buses. He dismissed claims that the individuals were enforcement officers from Lagos State agencies, identifying them instead as officials from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

“These individuals are conducting an enforcement exercise targeting sachet water products that fail to meet NAFDAC regulations, prioritizing public health and safety,” Wahab explained.

He reaffirmed that the state’s focus remains on sustainable plastic waste management, as outlined during an Engagement Workshop held on October 3, 2024. According to Wahab, the government is implementing mandatory Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for producers of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), sachets, and carrier bags of no less than 40 microns.

“To further support this initiative, we are establishing a Plastic Waste Management Fund in collaboration with Producers and Producer Responsibility Organizations (PROs). The fund, financed by contributions from producers and importers, will address the rising challenges of plastic waste in Lagos,” Wahab stated.

He urged the public to disregard misinformation regarding a sachet water ban and emphasized the state’s commitment to fostering dialogue with stakeholders to promote sustainable waste management while protecting economic interests.

Wahab also referenced the government’s January ban on the use and distribution of Styrofoam and other single-use plastics, citing their detrimental environmental impact. He highlighted how Styrofoam frequently clogs drainage channels across Lagos despite regular cleaning efforts, posing significant challenges to waste management.
