The Lagos State Government has announced plans to add electric-powered boats to the Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) fleet within the year, aiming to reduce fares and provide sustainable, eco-friendly water transport
LAGFERRY Managing Director, Hon. Abdoulbaq Ladi-Balogun, shared the plan in a statement on the state government’s X account on Wednesday. He explained that electric vessels have lower operating and maintenance costs, enabling the agency to offer more affordable fares to passengers.

“The Lagos State Government (LASG) plans to introduce electric-powered boats into the Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) fleet within the year, as part of its commitment to providing affordable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly public transportation,” the statement said.
Balogun noted that water transport is becoming increasingly popular among Lagos residents. Since February 4, 2020, LAGFERRY has transported 4.4 million passengers, a trend he referred to as the “Watermania Lifestyle,” where commuters leave their cars at the jetties to travel by boat.
He also highlighted that during the 2025 Detty December period, LAGFERRY recorded a tenfold increase in trips, as residents used the waterways to access beach houses and coastal resorts.
The initiative reflects Lagos State’s efforts to tackle rising transport costs, reduce traffic congestion, and promote environmentally responsible commuting.
