Victims of the building collapse along Adeniji Adele Road in the Isale Eko area of Lagos Island were reportedly served a quit notice before the incident but failed to vacate the premises, a source from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has said

The residential building collapsed in the early hours of Thursday, leading to the hospitalization of several occupants.
A LASEMA official, disclosed to Punch that the building had long been marked for demolition by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) due to its distressed state.
“The building was distressed and defused. It had been marked for demolition by LASBCA well before it collapsed.
“Our findings also revealed that tenants had been issued a quit notice, but they refused to move out,” the official added.
Another agency source confirmed that no one was trapped under the debris as of the time of the report, but manual excavation was ongoing due to space constraints common to buildings on Lagos Island.
“You know how closely built the houses are in that area. It’s difficult to bring in heavy equipment, so we’ve had to rely on manual excavation. Thankfully, there’s no one left in the rubble,” the source noted.
