The Lagos State Government has warned that sharing or forwarding child pornography and obscene publications involving children on social media carries a 14-year jail term under the state’s domestic and s3xual violence law
This was disclosed by the Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Domestic and S3xual Violence Agency, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, during a workshop for headteachers, teachers, social workers, and school counsellors in Lagos.
She explained that forwarding child pornography is a serious crime under the law, adding that such materials negatively affect the cognitive behavior of viewers, especially children. The workshop aimed to discourage the sharing of obscene videos and equip participants with knowledge to protect children’s rights.
Vivour-Adeniyi emphasized the critical role of school counsellors, social workers, and heads of schools in safeguarding children. She urged them to act as mandated reporters by identifying and addressing domestic and sexual violence cases.
“We believe enlightenment is superior to enforcement, so we focus on building the capacity of key service providers to prevent and appropriately respond to child protection issues in their institutions,” she said.
