The 22-year-old sustained the injury during one of his first preseason training sessions at Cobham, just days after rejoining the squad. According to multiple reports, Colwill lost his footing during a non-contact drill and immediately signaled for medical attention.

Chelsea revealed that the injury required immediate surgical intervention, which has now been successfully completed. The England international has begun rehabilitation under the supervision of the club’s medical team.

“This is a huge blow,” manager Enzo Maresca said. “Levi was a key part of our plans for the season. His leadership and composure at the back will be sorely missed.”

Colwill’s setback comes as Chelsea prepare for a demanding campaign, with the club competing in multiple competitions. His absence will likely open the door for other defensive options, including new signing Jorrel Hato, as well as Wesley Fofana, Benoît Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah, and Tosin Adarabioyo.

The typical recovery timeline for ACL injuries ranges from six to twelve months, which means Colwill could miss the entire season, depending on how his rehabilitation progresses.

This marks a significant blow to both Chelsea and the player, who was expected to play a pivotal role in the club’s defensive setup under Maresca.
