A 24-year-old man named Anthony Esan has been charged with attempted murder after stabbing a British soldier multiple times near a barracks in Kent.

Esan will appear in court on Thursday for the attack on the soldier, reportedly a Lieutenant-Colonel, in Gillingham, Kent, on Tuesday. The serviceman, in his 40s, is in hospital in a serious but stable condition after the incident.

Esan, who was arrested near his home in Rochester, has also been charged with possessing an offensive weapon in a public place. He will appear at Medway Magistrates’ Court.

General Sir Roly Walker, Head of the Army, condemned the stabbing as “horrific and unprovoked,” while Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said he was “shocked and appalled.”

The incident occurred at Sally Port Gardens, near Brompton Barracks, the headquarters of the British Army’s 1 Royal School of Military Engineering Regiment. The attack happened around 5:55 pm on Tuesday, and the suspect was arrested about 25 minutes later.
